At the beginning of 2019, the high-tech company TRUMPF opened one of the largest electric charging stations in Germany in the company’s own parking garage. Almost 90 charging connections are available to employees, customers and guests. The charging infrastructure was perfectly adapted to the current conditions and designed with the future in mind. But the almost 90 charging points are just the beginning. TRUMPF can expand its electric charging station to up to 400 charging points if required and is already planning further steps towards electromobility. TRUMPF is thus demonstrating how a company can advance electric mobility and make it usable for itself.

A Pioneer in E-Mobility

In early 2019, the high-tech company TRUMPF opened one of Germany’s largest electric vehicle charging stations in its company parking garage. Nearly 90 charging ports are available to employees, customers, and guests. The charging infrastructure was perfectly tailored to the existing conditions and designed with the future in mind. However, these nearly 90 charging points are just the beginning. TRUMPF can expand its electric charging station to up to 400 charging points as needed and is already planning further steps toward electric mobility. In doing so, TRUMPF demonstrates how a company can advance electric mobility and leverage it to its advantage.

Since February 2019, one of Germany’s largest electric vehicle charging stations has been inspiring people to switch to electric mobility.

In February 2019, the company opened one of Germany’s largest electric vehicle charging stations at its headquarters in Ditzingen. In the company’s own parking garage, employees can charge their personal vehicles, shared vehicles, and company cars. Customers and guests can also charge their electric cars there. On a dedicated floor, over 45 single and twin wallboxes with a total of 86 charging ports are available. With a 1,200A power supply available, each wallbox can easily be powered at up to 22 kW.

Motivation

TRUMPF is embracing change and helping to shape the mobility of tomorrow.

Electric vehicles have long been part of the company fleet, and StreetScooters have recently been added for transportation within the company grounds. With its in-house charging stations, TRUMPF is now taking decisive action and encouraging its employees to switch to electric mobility.

More and more employees rely on a hassle-free power supply for their vehicles, and the demand for charging within the company is growing. TRUMPF is addressing the challenges ahead and taking early steps to prepare for the transformation of transportation. This ensures that TRUMPF is optimally positioned for future developments.

Implementation

With an eye always on the future, TRUMPF is tackling this massive construction project.

The impetus for the company’s own charging stations came from TRUMPF’s sustainability department. The topic of electric mobility is becoming increasingly prominent and gaining in importance. Employees had been increasingly advocating internally for the ability to charge their vehicles on-site. In addition, part of the company’s fleet had already been electrified at that time, allowing employees to experience electric mobility firsthand both on company grounds and between locations. Reev was brought in to handle the design, implementation, and operation of the charging system. Since the parking garage was a new construction, the electric charging station could be optimally integrated into the planning.

The charging infrastructure was designed with the future in mind and set up so that the existing 86 charging connections can be expanded to up to 400 charging points. This would account for about 15% of all available parking spaces. To ensure that the charging stations can be supplied with sufficient power even as the number of users grows, a 5 MW transformer was installed. Although this capacity far exceeds the requirements of the current infrastructure size and utilization, it demonstrates how seriously TRUMPF takes the rise of e-mobility in the coming years and the importance it attaches to this trend.

Access to the parking garage level with the charging stations is controlled by a barrier and enabled via camera using e-license plate recognition. This ensures that only electric cars are parked in the designated parking spaces. To start the charging process, employees use their internal employee ID cards. Authorizing these cards for charging offers two advantages. First, it eliminated the need to set up a new access system and issue a second ID card. Second, the employee ID enables reev to intelligently assign charging sessions to the appropriate expense accounts and, for employee vehicles subject to charges, to initiate the automated billing process.

Although companies are still allowed to provide charging services to their employees free of charge and tax-free through the end of 2020, TRUMPF has decided to have its employees pay a small fee for charging their vehicles from the very beginning. Employees still benefit from this, however, since the hardware costs and electricity rates for charging at TRUMPF are still significantly lower than the cost of purchasing and installing a wallbox at home. However, since the charging stations in this case must comply with calibration regulations, slightly higher acquisition costs had to be accepted.

Operations

TRUMPF can relax—because all the complicated processes happen in the background.

The parking garage is now fully operational. Since reev handles all billing arrangements as well as maintenance and service, the new electric charging station does not create any additional work for TRUMPF. Using reev’s intelligent software, TRUMPF can—if desired—track charging sessions, monitor its charging and load management, check the utilization of the charging stations, and access many other features. All aspects of data protection are taken into account. The entire billing process runs in the background and is automated. Employee billing is processed monthly via credit card, while fleet and company vehicles are billed through account assignments. Guests can use roaming, and customers have access to on-demand charging with immediate billing, also via credit card.

Since reev handles all invoicing and bookkeeping, TRUMPF no longer has to do so—potentially for over 10,000 users—thereby saving the company valuable accounting resources. At the end of the month, TRUMPF receives a detailed breakdown of all revenue, broken down by accounting account. Employees receive individual statements. For TRUMPF, the electric charging station runs almost entirely on its own; the only task remaining is a quick review of the accounting records.

Outlook

Now that the project has finally been successfully completed, TRUMPF is already working on bringing its next vision to life.

The success of the project at the Ditzingen site is a clear testament to TRUMPF’s commitment. Since the opening, within just a few months, many new users have been enthusiastic about the service and have registered to charge their vehicles. In Ditzingen, TRUMPF has set a positive example—not only for TRUMPF’s many other locations, but also for other companies. The construction noise from the electric charging station has barely died down, and TRUMPF is already working on its next project. The company is now also taking the initiative in the area of electric carsharing. By setting up an “eCar to go” station on-site, employees who do not yet drive electric cars will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of e-mobility. In addition to test drives, this will also make it easy to cover the heavily traveled route between Ditzingen and Stuttgart Airport in a sustainable way. reev is once again on board for this initiative and is developing the payment module for the new car-sharing system specifically for TRUMPF.
