A flagship eMobility project by reev and N-ERGIE

In line with this commitment, the parking garage of the future opened in Nuremberg in July 2021. Together with reev, the company has succeeded in creating Franconia’s largest electric parking garage—featuring 128 charging points and intelligent energy management.

As an energy service provider with a commitment to sustainability, N-ERGIE acknowledges its responsibility toward the environment, the climate, the region, and the community. In line with this commitment, the “Parking Garage of the Future” opened in Nuremberg in July 2021. Together with reev, the company successfully built Franconia’s largest electric parking garage—featuring 128 charging stations and intelligent energy management. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

With 2,500 employees and annual revenue of €3.1 billion (2020), N-ERGIE plays a key role as an energy provider in Northern Bavaria. The energy company has made sustainability its overarching goal. As a result, it switched to e-mobility years ago: its electric fleet now comprises more than 140 electric vehicles. For electricity generation, the company relies primarily on solar power systems.

Facts, Figures, and Data

128 charging stations are integrated into the flagship project.

Spanning 14 mezzanine levels, the parking garage houses a total of 338 parking spaces, 128 of which offer charging capabilities for electric cars and 25 additional ones for electric two-wheelers. For managing the charging solution, N-ERGIE opted for the reev Dashboard Pro. To use resources efficiently and keep operational costs low in a project of this scale, the company placed particular emphasis on process automation.

N-ERGIE’s commitment to sustainability and regional focus is also evident in the parking garage’s energy supply: High-performance 100-kWp PV modules are installed on the roof, providing green electricity for the parking garage. Combined with an additional storage capacity of 112 kWh, this enables optimal energy utilization in the parking garage of the future. When there is a surplus of energy from the solar system, the battery storage is charged, while the stored electricity is supplied directly to the cars when there is little sunlight.

In addition to in-depth monitoring features—such as consumption tracking, user management, and charging management—the reev Dashboard Pro also offers flexible pricing options and automated billing for charging sessions. Public charging (ad hoc charging and eRoaming) is also available.

Motivation

As compact as possible, conserving space and resources

The idea for the parking garage originated in N-ERGIE’s site development plans. The merger of two branches created an increased need for parking spaces around the company’s premises in Nuremberg-Sandreuth. The multi-story parking garage meets this need while also helping to prevent overcrowding in city centers by providing over 300 parking spaces for all user groups. Last but not least, the partial self-sufficiency in solar energy demonstrates that sustainability is a top priority in this project. The use of renewable energy was a key requirement.

Implementation

Holistically Sustainable

Since construction began in May 2020, the project has been guided by the principle of sustainability. For example, the trees that were originally on the parking garage site were transplanted. The roof is equipped with a solar panel system and a green roof. The location’s good access to public transportation and the VAG-Rad bike-sharing program also encourage additional CO2-saving modes of transportation.

The lighthouse project was implemented in close coordination between N-ERGIE, reev, and reev solutions. This ensured seamless integration of hardware, software, and electrical engineering design: Together with experts from N-ERGIE—including Stefan Mull, project manager for innovative technology—reev handled all planning and project design. The highly specialized electricians at reev solutions carried out the technical design and programming of the charging stations, as well as the integration of load and energy management systems.

For the hardware, the choice was made to use the eMH3 from ABL. To take advantage of in-depth monitoring functions and to benefit from the full potential of automation, the charging fleet is operated using the reev Dashboard Pro. This allows charging processes to be automated and handled in the background in a legally compliant manner.

Operations

eMobility for All User Groups

The completed parking garage and charging stations are not only available to N-ERGIE employees and customers. Guests and residents should also be able to park and charge their vehicles here. In addition to the parking spaces with charging capabilities, there is also a 150-kW DC fast-charging station at the entrance.

A smart parking management system uses an app to support everything from reservations and parking space allocation to the final step of locating your vehicle. As public charging stations, the eAuto parking spaces are also available for ad hoc charging and eRoaming. This results in various user groups with different charging rates. The fleet manager at N-ERGIE can clearly monitor and manage these charging processes through their own online operator portal, the reev Dashboard. Billing for charging sessions takes place fully automatically and in compliance with legal requirements in the background. The online operator portal provides the fleet manager with an overview of individual charging sessions and their consumption at any time.

Load and Energy Management

A Holistic, Coordinated Approach

As an energy company committed to sustainability, efficient energy management also plays a key role for N-ERGIE. This is made possible by combining a PV system with a storage unit: When the sun is shining, connected electric cars are charged directly from the system, and the energy storage unit is replenished. The storage system can then release the stored energy during nighttime or at peak demand periods. reev offers load management that regulates the power supply to the sub-distribution panels on the mezzanine levels and ensures that there is always sufficient power available for the charging stations from the photovoltaic system or the battery.

In addition, N-ERGIE has implemented a smart information system. This system notifies registered drivers of elevated emission levels in the city center and thus guides them to park their vehicles. In addition to parking and charging options, the facility offers car-sharing services so that users can continue their journey from there.

Outlook

Expansion and Digitalization in the Works

With the “Parking Garage of the Future,” N-ERGIE has implemented a project that has been very well received. It is a visible symbol of the company’s environmentally conscious goals and helps alleviate traffic congestion in Nuremberg’s downtown area. The parking garage has not only been equipped with charging stations but, thanks to solar-powered electricity, software-based charging infrastructure, and intelligent load and energy management, has become an eco-friendly e-parking facility for all user groups.

Even shortly after its opening, the parking garage of the future remains open to innovation. The project was designed so that expansions to the charging solution can be implemented flexibly. Initially, every parking space can be converted into an e-parking space with a charging point. In addition, the goal is to achieve more comprehensive digitization, including AI solutions for user management.
