If you are planning to integrate your own charging station into your household, our checklist will give you an overview of all the aspects you should pay attention to when planning your charging solution.* We generally recommend that you seek advice on implementation and on choosing the right charging station. You should also have the installation conditions checked by a specialist.

Check technical requirements

Depending on the charging power, the charging station must be matched to the car. Most cars have a charging power between 3kW and 22kW. It also needs its own power connection from the fuse box to the charging station, i.e. there must be no other access to this power connection, as the charging station uses all the power. An intermediate meter may be needed to track how much electricity the charging station is using. This way, the electricity consumption of the charging station can be considered separately from the other electricity consumption of the house. This is relevant for the landlord, for example.

o Vehicle type and plug type: __________

o Charging power: __________

o Charging mode: __________

o Own power connection available (simultaneity factor 1.0)

o Intermediate meter (not) necessary

o Required length of the charging cable: __________

Check constructional suitability

Depending on the structural requirements, excavation or civil engineering work may be necessary.

o Foundation necessary / available

o Supply line necessary / available

o Civil engineering company (not) necessary

Ensure energy supply

The power cross-section of the cable depends on voltage drop, ambient temperature, cable length and type of installation. Consult an electrician to determine this. To ensure that the grid capacity at your location is sufficient, you must obtain a permit from your grid operator for the power supply of your charging station. Have the existing electrical installation checked to ensure that charging at full power is safe for several hours.

o Required power cross-section of the power line:__________

o Approval of the grid operator available

o Existing electrical installation checked

Guarantee safety

o Residual current circuit breaker (FI/RCD) (possibly already integrated in charging station)
o Circuit breaker (LS/CB)
o Other safety precautions (weather protection, theft protection,
user authorisation)
o Protection class of the charging station: __________

Rechtliche Hintergründe prüfen

Find out whether legal permits need to be obtained to erect the charging station. This may be necessary in cases of listed buildings or if you are not the owner of the planned location of your charging station.

Plan for future viability

When planning your charging station, consider future scenarios, such as a change of vehicle or upcoming innovations in electromobility, in order to be able to upgrade or convert easily if necessary.

Hire an electrician

Charging devices must be installed in accordance with DIN VDE 0100-722. Not every electrician is sufficiently qualified to install a charging station. Make sure that your electrician is certified according to DIN VDE 1000-10 (VDE 1000-10):2009-01 and has completed additional training for charging infrastructure so that he is familiar with the requirements and standards for connecting your charging stations.
