How do you set up charging stations at your company?
We’ll walk you through every step of setting up charging infrastructure using the company DATEV as an example.

Electric mobility plays a key role among the measures taken to reduce CO₂ emissions. For this reason, the company has pushed forward with the electrification of its vehicle fleet and established its own charging infrastructure at seven locations. In collaboration with reev, a total of 44 charging ports for electric vehicles were installed on DATEV’s premises.
DATEV eG is an IT service provider headquartered in Nuremberg and, with more than 8,300 employees, is one of the largest software companies in Europe. DATEV is known for providing high-quality software for tax advisors, certified public accountants, and attorneys, as well as their clients—most of whom are small and medium-sized businesses. The company acts as a trusted partner, guiding approximately 471,000 clients through the digital transformation of their business processes.

DATEV combines tradition with innovation. The company takes responsibility for its employees, society, and the environment in many ways. With digital business models and a sustainable mobility concept, DATEV aims to pave the way to the future—for its members and customers. This includes, among other things, the step-by-step electrification of its vehicle fleet. DATEV uses only green electricity, supplemented by four of its own solar power systems. This means that all electric vehicles are charged with green electricity.
DATEV operates 44 of its own charging points at seven different locations in Germany. To manage and control these charging stations across all locations, the company opted for a charging infrastructure with integrated cloud software. The online operator portal, reev Dashboard Pro, automates all processes, so that virtually no resources are required to operate the charging infrastructure.
To ensure efficient utilization, the charging time is limited to two hours. This allows for up to 180 charging cycles per day. In the DATEV vehicle fleet, electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) account for about 10 percent, and in the internal fleet, 30 percent. (As of March 2022) DATEV’s in-house charging infrastructure makes the company independent of external service providers and enables it to charge both fleet vehicles and employees’ electric cars with green electricity.
DATEV embraces its corporate responsibility—on environmental, economic, and social levels. In 2001, DATEV’s Executive Board adopted guidelines for sustainable business practices, thereby making sustainability an integral part of the company’s DNA.
Today, the company has a comprehensive sustainability strategy that permeates all areas of the business. As early as 2012, DATEV acquired its first two electric vehicles. Since then, thanks to the positive response, the vehicle fleet has been gradually converted to electric mobility. In addition, wall boxes were installed—initially without integrated software.
To enhance the company’s appeal as an employer and significantly promote sustainable mobility, charging stations for employees and visitors were finally put into operation in 2017. In 2020, in preparation for a major expansion, charging software from three different providers was tested. The choice fell on the reev Dashboard Pro: “The intuitive online operator portal, with its many useful features and customizable settings, was the deciding factor. Added to this are high-quality hardware and excellent service in the event of malfunctions as well as for technical and business-related questions. Furthermore, working with a regional service provider was also an important criterion for DATEV,” said Michael Thoma, Energy Officer at DATEV.
DATEV commissioned reev to provide the basic charging infrastructure for a total of seven locations. The first step was to identify suitable parking spaces for the high-quality eMH3 wall boxes from ABL. After all, the power supply lines needed to be as short as possible. Special attention was paid to fire safety, which is particularly relevant for parking garages and underground parking facilities. The installation of 44 charging points at 7 locations required a high degree of coordination among all parties involved. In close collaboration with the electrical contractor reev solutions and DATEV representatives, an on-site PreCheck was conducted to assess the existing electrical infrastructure. Based on these findings, site-specific planning could begin, and the optimal installation locations were determined.
reev solutions handled the technical design and programming of the charging stations, as well as the integration of load and energy management. This ensured seamless coordination between the hardware, software, and electrical design.
The charging stations are located on the DATEV premises, so only employees and visitors with access authorization can charge their vehicles. A distinction is made between vehicles in the internal fleet and employees’ private vehicles, company cars, and visitors’ electric vehicles. According to Thoma, the charging process runs smoothly for all users. Since charging is very simple, there are very few questions about technical procedures.
Expanding the charging infrastructure is an issue that DATEV is planning for with an eye toward the future—as needed. “To be prepared, we’re currently developing a plan for further expansion. That way, we already have the plan in place and can react quickly,” says Thoma.
Currently, DATEV provides electricity free of charge. However, to ensure a level playing field for employees who drive cars with internal combustion engines, Thoma believes it is likely that charging costs will be billed in the future.
One of the company’s goals is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. To this end, DATEV is working toward a significant phase-out of internal combustion engines in its vehicle fleet. This effort is supported by the company’s own car policy. The mobility concept, which includes leased bicycles and commuter passes, among other things, is also continuously reviewed and adjusted.
