What subsidies are available for charging infrastructure?
1. Subsidy guideline for electric vehicles
In order to accelerate and advance the mobility transformation, the Federal Cabinet adopted a market incentive programme for electric mobility on 18 May 2016. Among other things, this includes funding for constructing electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Since 2017, it has been possible to apply for pro-rata funding of the investment costs of publicly accessible charging infrastructure.
The aim of this programme is to establish a nationwide network of rapid and standard charging stations. The Federal Government will provide a total of €300 million for this purpose, initially until the end of 2020. Of this, €100 million is available for standard charging stations and €200 million for rapid charging stations.
In the case of the economic stimulus package for mitigating the effects of the Coronavirus crisis , the federal government decided to provide an additional €2.5 billion for expanding safe, modern charging station infrastructure.

- Businesses / companies
- Non-profit organisations
- Private individuals
- Municipalities
What is subsidised?
- Normal charging points (AC charging stations)
- Rapid charging points (DC charging stations)
- Installation and grid connection
- Improvement of existing charging infrastructure (increase of charging capacity, compliance with plug standards, preparation of additional charging points)
How much is the subsidy?
- Normal charging points (up to 22kW) each with 40% (up to €2,500)
- Rapid charging points (from 22kW) each with up to 50% (up to €30,000)
- Grid connection – low voltage per location with 60% (up to €5,000)
- Grid connection – medium voltage per location with 60% (up to €50,000)
One of the prerequisites for the subsidy is that the stations are publicly accessible. Acquisition, installation and set-up can all be subsidised.

2. KfW subsidy for private charging stations on residential buildings
Another subsidy option is the grant from KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) for private charging stations on residential buildings. The aim of the subsidy measure is to support private individuals in switching to eMobility and to promote the expansion of the charging infrastructure in the private sector for this purpose. Promoters of investment measures in non-publicly accessible areas of owner-occupied or rented residential buildings, such as:
- Tenants
- Homeowners
- Landlords
What is subsidised?
- Subsidy for the installation of newly installed, private (not publicly accessible) charging stations on existing residential buildings
How much is the subsidy?
- €900 per charging point
